The match has been set and buzz around the WWE Championship is back once again. Shinsuke Nakamura defeated John Cena on Smackdown Live to confirm he will challenge Jinder Mahal at Summerslam for the WWE Championship.
Shinsuke Nakamura Defeats John Cena
Nakamura has been on a tear since arriving at NXT and continued his ways when drafted to the main roster. He has never been pinned or submitted on live TV. Nakamura is a global superstar and he is now being showcased in this light.
In their very first in-ring encounter, Shinsuke Nakamura defeated John Cena in a tremendous main event from Smackdown Live. Cena hit his trusted Attitude Adjustment and shockingly he only got the 2 count. Nakamura joined a short list of people who kicked out of John Cena’s finishing move on ‘free TV’. John, who was still in shock, picked up Nakamura and hit another ‘AA’, rolled through and attempted a third but it was countered. Shinsuke fought out of it, connected with a release back suplex (with an awful landing for Cena) and then came the Kinshasa for the win.
Shinsuke has done something that not many others ever have, beat John Cena, clean and in their first attempt. With Nakamura winning with the Kinshasa, its clear they value the emphatic nature of the finishing maneuver and know it should end matches.
WWE Championship Match at Summerslam
When Summerslam arrives on August 2oth, we will see two ‘firsts’. We will see Jinder Mahal vs Shinsuke Nakamura on television for the first time, the two have met before at a live event and Jinder handed Shinsuke his first main roster defeat. Secondly, we will see Shinsuke’s first shot at becoming WWE Champion. As previously predicted in our Summerslam match card prediction.
Jinder has done better than many assumed he would as WWE Champion. His character development is tremendous, but with that being said he is not ‘putting butts in seats’. For Nakamura, you could say the opposite. Shinsuke is one of the most popular superstars NXT ever had and his popularity has shown on the main roster since his debut. With a change in championship reign, it would certainly change the tide in how the attendance is going.
Alongside Nakamura’s popularity, comes his winning mentality and record. As previously mentioned, Nakamura is undefeated on the main roster, in one on one competition. His undefeated streak hit an all time high on Smackdown Live when he defeated John Cena. This bodes the question, can anyone stop Shinsuke Nakamura’s dominance? Will we see a new WWE Champion come Summerslam?
