During Wrestlemania 33 weekend, it was announced the Mae Young Classic was planned, afterwards excitement grew from the beginning. A fitting tribute to the iconic Mae Young. Those taking part are ready. With all the excitement, a very special guest was in attendance. ‘Rowdy’ Ronda Rousey.
On July 13th, the Mae Young Classic officially began. All 32 participants paraded and introduced themselves in the ring. The announced women were set, but we had some surprises too. Mia Yim and Santana Garrett appeared. Although the main country represented was America, woman from all over the world have been brought in to challenge in this tournament. Toni Storm and Rhea Ripley from Australia, Piper Niven and Kay Lee Ray from Scotland and Jazzy Gabert from Germany.
Special Guest – Ronda Rousey
One of the competitors presented was Shayna Baszler. The former UFC fighter featured in The Ultimate Fighter with Team Rousey vs Team Tate. This is where her friendship with Ronda Rousey began. Shayna has been a wrestling fan for many years and actually made an appearance at Ring of Honours 13th Anniversary show in 2015. She accompanied ReDRagon to the ring for their ROH World Tag Team Championship defense.
With Shayna making her debut in a WWE setting through the Mae Young Classic, it was only right her good friends were there to cheer her on. One of her best friends was in attendance. ‘Rowdy’ Ronda Rousey. She arrived at Full Sail that day and instantly greeted by Triple H. Rousey being in attendance for this tournament is huge for WWE and the focus for Mae Young Classic. Moreover, it brings even more eyes to an already fantastic event. If WWE have sense they will keep Baszler in the tournament until the live shows, to try have Ronda in attendance as much as possible.
Former UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion Ronda Rousey was in attendance for the Mae Young Classic tapings at Full Sail University on Thursday. She sat at ringside with Marina Shafir and Jessamyn Duke to watch their friend Shayna Baszler.
We all know Ronda is a huge wrestling fan. She made a big impact at Wrestlemania 31 with Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson. With Shayna making her transition to WWE, will be see Ronda follow in her footsteps? Myself and many others hope it does one day happen. WWE want higher ratings? Bring in a female entity like Ronda and showcase her like they currently do with Brock Lesnar.
