John Cena recently made his return to WWE programming on the July 4th edition of Smackdown Live. In the weeks prior to his return, Cena was advertised as returning as a ‘Free Agent’. Speculation intensified week to week, what did this mean for Cena? Could he just go between Raw and Smackdown Live each week? In a recent interview with Complex Sports, Cena revealed the reasoning behind it;

“The reason that I wanted to be a free agent and the reason they kind of granted my request is because I don’t know if I’ll be available for SmackDown specific only, or RAW specific only and I also know that my days are numbered. I just turned 40 in April and we have so many young and talented performers. I don’t know how many years I have left. So in the time I have left, I’m gonna do what I can to dedicate to this company. I just want to be able to do it the most time that I possibly can.”

John Cena is a trusted member of the WWE roster for over 15 years, and it seems his decisions and requests are trusted too. WWE have repaid his commitment to the company by allowing him this new role.

What Is Left For John Cena?

Let’s look at what Cena could still achieve before be retires.

John Cena

  1. John Cena has never held the WWE Intercontinental Championship. Througout his storied and unpecidented career, this is the one main roster championship that has eluded him.
  2. 17 time World heavyweight Champion. In 2017, John Cena accomplished what many never thought would be possible. He tied Ric Flair on 16 World Title reigns. Although short-lived, it was still monumental. Could we see John Cena set the new record before he retires?
  3. John Cena against Roman Reigns. WWE have clearly chosen Reigns to be the new face of the company. Many fans are hoping and waiting in anticipation to see if we see the changing of the guard. Roman Reigns vs John Cena at Wrestlemania would be huge for the company, and the fans.
